Two esteemed faculty researchers from the College of Marine and Allied Sciences (CMAS) of Mindanao State University at Naawan showcased their research at the recently concluded 13th International Phycological Congress (IPC) held in Panglao, Bohol from June 8 to 13, 2025. With the theme “Promoting Algal Biodiversity Conservation, Enhancing Ecosystem Services and Resilience,” the event was hosted by the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
Assistant Professor Lovella Calala presented her study titled “Macroalgal assemblages in three coastal municipalities in Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines,” which explored the diversity and distribution of macroalgae in selected coastal areas. Her research contributes valuable baseline data critical to understanding ecological health, habitat connectivity, and the potential for seaweed-based livelihood in the region.
Meanwhile, Mr. Erwin Jones Tucong shared his work on “Occurrence of HAB-forming dinoflagellates in four selected coastal municipalities in Zamboanga Sibugay, Southwestern Philippines: Implications to local fisheries and management.” His presentation shed light on the ecological and socio-economic risks posed by harmful algal blooms (HABs) and emphasized the need for proactive management strategies to safeguard fisheries and coastal livelihoods.
Organized every four years by the International Phycological Society (IPS), a global network dedicated to advancing the science of phycology, the IPC brings together experts and researchers from around the world to discuss emerging trends and solutions in algal science. MSUN's participation in this prestigious congress affirms its growing contribution to international marine research and its continuing commitment to the conservation of aquatic and marine biodiversity.
