Mindanao State University at Naawan welcomed world-renowned marine biologist Dr. Gustav Paulay from the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, for a two day event that brought together students, faculty, and researchers from various institutions to deepen their knowledge on reef biodiversity and marine science research methodologies.
Organized by the Marine Science Society - MSU at Naawan in collaboration with the DARES Center and the MSUN - Office of Global Engagement and Partnership (OGEP), the “Meet & Greet with Dr. Gustav Paulay” included a public lecture and a specialized workshop that engaged participants in both theory and practice.
The event opened on May 23, 2025, with a lecture titled "Reef Biodiversity: Inside Story", held at the MSUN Audio-Visual Room and attended by participants from MSUN and institutions including Camiguin Polytechnic State College, MSU-IIT, MSU Marawi, Davao del Norte State College, Davao Oriental State University, Visayas State University, and others. Dr. Paulay’s talk explored the intricacies of reef ecosystems, the importance of invertebrates in marine biodiversity, and the global implications of coral reef conservation.
An open forum followed the lecture, offering students and faculty an opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Paulay. Participants expressed appreciation for the insights shared, emphasizing the importance of such academic exchanges in enhancing local research initiatives.
On May 24, 2025, Dr. Paulay facilitated a hands-on workshop on specimen processing techniques, focusing on photography, vouchering, and DNA barcoding. Designed for 30 pre-selected students, the workshop provided practical training on essential tools for biodiversity research and taxonomic identification. The session was praised for its relevance, especially in supporting local efforts in marine biodiversity documentation and conservation.
Capping off his visit, Dr. Paulay met with faculty researchers on May 26, 2025, at the MSUN Sea Cucumber Museum to explore potential research collaborations. Discussions centered on advancing projects in fisheries and marine sciences, with particular interest in invertebrate taxonomy and coastal resource management.
This visit marks a continuation of Dr. Paulay’s engagement with MSUN, building on the success of his 2021 and 2024 webinar series with the university. It also aligns with the institution’s ongoing mission to foster global partnerships and elevate local marine science research to international standards.
The event showcased MSUN’s commitment to creating a collaborative learning environment and strengthening its role as a leader in marine biodiversity and conservation research in the region.
